Tribute to Maggie

Maggie came to us on May 8th, 2018 as a 10 year old girl that needed a new home. We had been without a beagle for 9 years and I decided it was time to fill the void in the house that Lucy had left. Maggie’s picture reminded me so much of Lucy that we made arrangements with Cathy Kassab to pick her up. She was a great little traveler, loved to go in the car, or wherever her people were going. She loved everyone, barked at no one (except one lady who walked in the neighborhood everyday!) and expected everyone to love her back (or at least bring a treat when they visited!). No purse, bag, box or container was safe from Maggie’s beagle nose if left in her reach, or even when it was not! Maggie personified the refrain, "Where there’s a will there’s a way" And Maggie certainly had a will as my bathroom remodelers quickly found out when she dragged their lunch cooler across the room and helped herself to a sausage sandwich and a brownie for dessert! Being animal lovers themselves they fretted all night about Maggie ingesting chocolate, but I reassured them she would be fine, she had already survived a king size Snickers bar and various other treats out of my purse, not to mention my mother’s entire birthday cake that she spirited off the table leaving it all perfectly intact except for the 3/4s she ate!!! Her sugar high lasted several hours!!!

Maggie’s love of food was surpassed only by the thrill of escaping from the house and following her nose wherever it led. She led me on many a merry chase through the woods usually to end up popping out at my neighbors’ house who slipped a leash on her and made the call to let us know her adventure had ended. Even the mailman left his mail truck to bring her home when he spotted her during his route!

In March of this year Maggie was diagnosed with lymphoma; we knew it would not be long, but we were unprepared for the grief and emptiness we feel without her. She was released from her suffering on May 3rd of this year, just a few days short of 4 years with us. We miss her every minute of the day. She’s not here to greet our visitors and show them out when they leave. She’s not here to remind us when it’s suppertime (hers and ours!). She no longer bounces down the steps to start her day and be our faithful and constant companion. Maggie was a force to be reckoned with, her time with us was way too short. She was a much loved dog, our hearts will be heavy for a very long time.
